There's another guy who's name isn't widely known and that's Jaki Liebezeit who played with Can.
WEIRD grooves. Just out. I heard him on a Bill Laswell produced Nicky Skopelitis disc. Really crazy grooves.
I used to think Phil Rudd SUCKED but I am more appreciative of his powerful grooves now. Perfect for the song.
Liberty Devitto is similar. I really like his playing.

I also really liked the groove based on 6/8 on Seal's "Don't Cry" off the same disc as "Kiss from a Rose" [which got WAY more attention than Cry, even tho Cry's a better song IMO ], performed by either the great "Harvey Newmark," or "Andy Mason," as it were ...
Thanx for the tip on Jaki Liebezeit with Can, ben...i'll have to check him out...
I too liked DeVotto's playing...evidently, it just seems that maybe he just needs to play more to pop-rock songs [& keep his cake-hole shut at clinics, perhaps? ]....

yeah Andy Newmark (i didn't miss this guy)...listen to Lennon's "woman" over & over again. i also thought Andy did a bunch of Clapton sessions. his groove article in MD with 5s as subdivisions was cool too.
the guys i missed were:
Joey Heredia (read great things, read the interview but heard NUTTIN' to date)
Kirk Covington

Joey Heredia plays a lot here in LA. I saw him 10 years ago and talk about growth! He played fast paradiddles all the time. Now he floats with a light touch and is pure groove and song...no ego in his playing at all last time I saw him. He seemed to go through some type of growth thing.
Bobby Colomby is also cool w/Blood, Sweat, & Tears.
Hey Geoff, let me know when you land on that "ultimate snare that needs to be the ultimate funk CRACK."
